Komoot Women’s Badlands Rally | 2024

The Komoot Women’s Rallys are exciting events that bring together women cyclists from all over the world to embark on an adventure-filled journey. This rally is more than just a typical cycling event – it’s a celebration of women in the outdoors, promoting camaraderie, empowerment, and exploration.

Participants have the opportunity to test their limits, connect with like minded individuals, and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature while enjoying the thrill of bikepacking. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newcomer to the world of bikepacking, these Rallys promise an unforgettable experience that combines challenge, community, and the joy of two-wheeled exploration.

The most recent Komoot Women’s Rally followed the Badlands Route in Spain.

Badlands was created to encourage the gravel cycling and bikepacking in Eastern Andalusia, a unique place in Europe where its only deserts meet deep forests, the Mediterranean coast and its highest mountain pass.

This self supported event covered approx 700KM & 12,000M elevation over 7 days. It’s a pretty epic achievement whether it’s someone doing their first bikepacking trip or someone with lots of previous experience.

Self-supported bikepacking is a form of adventure cycling where riders carry all the gear and supplies they need for their journey on their bikes, without relying on external support vehicles or frequent stops at stores. This type of bikepacking emphasizes independence, self-reliance, and the ability to navigate and manage unforeseen challenges.

I feel hugely grateful to have had the opportunity to be a small part of the Komoot Women’s Rallys. I met some really inspiring woman along the way and hope that our paths will cross again in the future.

The support from both the riders and the Komoot team was amazing and every day handed us a new adventure.

The Badlands Route was the perfect combination – challenging, yet rewarding and incredibly beautiful.

Amy | Participant of the Komoot Women’s Badlands Rally

The Komoot Women’s Badlands Route started in Granada, a beautiful city in the south of Spain just in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. 75 women from all over the world rolled out of the city on Saturday 20th April together, off on an adventure.

The Komoot Women’s Badlands Rally followed the Badlands route climbing up into the beautiful Gorafe Desert. I think this is some of the wildest landscape I’ve ever seen! On day 3, big storms stopped play meaning a rest day in Gor. A cute little tiny town in the middle of nowhere. The rest day brought everyone together and allowed people to catch up, rest or have a 1 day adventure in the local area. By Day 4 the storms had cleared and the riders were back on route, heading to Velefique, the highest point on this day was 2168M. After this the route went towards the beach and a place called Agua Amarga. The beautiful blue sea was a welcome sight after 4 full days in the desert. We followed the coast for a day before then heading back into another desert. This time the Tabernas Desert.

The Tabernas Desert is in the province of Almeria, it’s well known (mostly) for it’s dramatic rocky landscapes, canyons and famous for its western film set Fort Bravo. Tabernas has been used as a filming location for many western films and is a pretty cool spot to see! The final two days took the riders through more incredible landscapes and fruit trees – Lemon and Orange trees lined the route, and looked beautiful in the hot Spanish desert sun. The Rally finished on Saturday 27th April in Almeria at the beach. A huge achievement for everyone who participated and something really special to be part of.

The support team work so hard in making this event such an incredible experience. Lael leading the pack and being a constant inspiration to all, Rue filming the whole thing whilst riding every day. Ashley behind the lens, capturing every moment in such beautiful detail. Cali & Anna on logistics, general problem solving, organisation and everything else! There are also many more people behind the event that work so hard to make this what it is. Im so proud to be part of this team and share this mad and wonderful experience with them.
